Do you know, at this very minute, that God is pursuing you? Even if you’ve been a Believer all of your life, He is pursuing you. He continues to pursue you and wants to deeply connect with you and your heart.
You know when you had that check in your spirit recently? That was God. When you said those words you wanted to take back as soon as they left your lips? That was God. When you acted one way, or didn’t act in another. That was God.
He loves you with His whole heart and His Holy Spirit walks with you, follows you, and even goes after you when you turn away. In 1893 Francis Thompson coined the phrase “the Hound of Heaven” when describing how God unceasingly pursues us, encouraging us to follow Him.
David notes God’s great omnipresence in Psalm 139 (The Message, verses 7-12):
Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit?
to be out of your sight?
If I climb to the sky, you’re there!
If I go underground, you’re there!
If I flew on morning’s wings
to the far western horizon,
You’d find me in a minute—
you’re already there waiting!
Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark!
At night I’m immersed in the light!”
It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you;
night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to you.
God’s presence everywhere is a very good thing.
But, what if you didn’t follow God like you wanted to? We all know that feeling. It is a feeling of guilt and remorse, which leads to repentance. May I encourage you to let God have your guilt. Let Him be the One who cleans the slate.
The stated goal of the Gospel is reconciliation. Jesus came to make a way for sinful man to have a relationship with God as God designed in the beginning.
Many Jews and Christians will celebrate the Passover in the coming days. For most followers of Jesus, we can see that the Old Testament Passover Lamb, the One whose blood protected the Hebrews from the Angel of Death, is the same Lamb as the New Testament Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus’ sacrifice is THE way of reconciliation with God.
Now that we are set right with God by means of this sacrificial death, the consummate blood sacrifice, there is no longer a question of being at odds with God in any way. If, when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of his Son, now that we’re at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of his resurrection life! Now that we have actually received this amazing friendship with God, we are no longer content to simply say it in plodding prose. We sing and shout our praises to God through Jesus, the Messiah! (Romans 5:9-11, The Message)
God is wooing you! He wants you and He wants your heart. Yes, He allows things to happen in your life – maybe even really bad things – so that you will look for Him. When you are ready to turn to Him, let Him have your guilt.
And once you do so, He will give you great peace and a new heart and a new understanding of true love.
